UC Fit For Life
UC Fit for Life is a club I decided to join when I came here at the beginning of this year. I was looking for a way to get involved with another group of students, but also having the chance to volunteer. UC Fit for Life is a student organization that volunteers at Taft Elementary School once a week with the children from the after school program, the Boys and Girls club. The students of the group make up fun games to play with them to get their mind off of schoolwork for a while and burn some energy. At first, we teach them proper stretching mechanisms to do before physical activity. Then, we play games with them such as tag, capture the treasure, and dodge ball. Finally, before we leave we always do the Bearcat Cheer with them. Throughout the year we have also held a few fundraisers for them to raise moneys to buy them gym scooters. We’ve had a trail mix fundraiser, a fundraiser at Firehouse Subs, and a bake sale.
Being in this group has made a huge impact on me. Some of the boys and girls in this program are not as fortunate as others, and to see the happiness in them whenever we show up is amazing. They are so thankful that we take time out of our day to come and play with them. This has made realize that the little things in life really do matter, and we shouldn’t take for granted what we have. Being in UC Fit for Life has also been an escape from schoolwork for me. Every week I know I’ll always have and hour on Wednesday to put school aside and play with the children, and I can always guarantee a good laugh. I will never forget when one day we were asking the kids who their favorite singers were and their responses were artists like “Lil Wayne, Nicki Minaj, and Michael Jackson." In addition, to the fun in playing with the children I also met a different group of students on campus. I became friends with students from other majors, different years, and different interests. Overall, it was a lot of fun and I plan on continuing to be a part of the group next year!
I chose a movie/slideshow to capture a few of the memories that I had at Taft Elementary School and to also try and display what we do as a group. It goes through stretching, playing games, and fundraising. It is also in a snapshot themed presentation to portray that everything happened so fast. The kids have so much energy and even if organization was the goal, it almost never happened. Ultimately, my goal was to portray my volunteering at Taft Elementary as a great experience.
